  • Daesoon Academy of Sciences attended ANU Religion Conference 2018
    From April 5-7, 2018, Daesoon Academy of Sciences attended ANU (Australian National University) Religion Conference on the theme, “Sacred Sites/Sacred Stories: Global Perspectives” in response to the university’s invitation and a request that Daesoon Jinrihoe present on the sacred sites of our religious order. In the first presentation titled, “The Yeoju Headquarters Temple Complex as a Global Work of Art,” Massimo Introvigne (Director, Center for Studies on New Religions) showed many photos of Daesooon Jinrihoe’s headquarters temple complex and introduced its sacred beauty. Secondly, Seongam Cha Seon-geun from Daesoon Religion and Culture Institution presented a paper on “The Sacred Space of Daesoon Jinrihoe: Distinctiveness and Significance” and explained that the sacredness of Daesoon Jinrihoe is unique in that it can be understood through a combination of all the major scholarly theories of religious sacredness. In particular, his analysis of the Feng Shui of the five Daesoon Jinrihoe temple complexes drew special attention from the audience. Lastly, Rosita Sorite (Diplomat, former Chairperson of the European Union) presented her paper titled “The Yeoju Headquarters Temple Complex as a Centre for Social Welfare and Humanitarian Aid.” She emphasized that Daesoon Jinrihoe’s charity aid work is a devoted activity that is rarely found in the world and is also an exemplary case study of a religion that makes great contributions to society. In the discussion time after her presentation, there were many questions from the audience and some scholars said they wished to see Daesoon Jinrihoe’s scripture, the Jeon-gyeong, academic papers, and other regular publications of Daesoon Jinrihoe translated into English to make them available for Western readers in near future.

  • Daesoon Academy Sciences Attended the Third Baltic Alliances for Asian Studies (BAAS)
    Daesoon Academy Sciences attended the Third Baltic Alliances for Asian Studies(BAAS) which was held April 13-15, 2018 in Riga, the capital of Latvia. The conference was organized by the Baltic Alliance for Asian studies, Latvian Society for the Study of Religion, and Centre for Korean Studies of the University of Latvia. The aim of this conference was to bring together researchers from Baltic nations and elsewhere to present their research fields and to discuss different topics related to Asian and Middle-Eastern cultures and societies. During the conference titled, “Dynamic Asia: Shaping the Future”, about 80 scholars presented their papers during 18 different sessions for a three-day period. The main theme of the sessions were related to religion, culture, and the economies of Korea, China, and Japan. Regarding Korean religions, there was a special session titled “Dynamic Korean Religions: The Expansion and Globalization of Korean New Religions. From Donghak to Daesoon Jinrihoe.” The chair of the session, Massimo Introvigne (Center for Studies on New Religions, Italy) presented a paper titled, “Dynamic Religion: Korean New Religions, A Success Story.” He clarified the causes and processes behind the development of Korean religions and explained how Daesoon Jinrihoe, in particular, had grown into one of the largest Korean new religions. Bernadette RIGAL-CELLARD(Bordeaux University, France) made the second presentation titled “Daesoon Jinrihoe: Reclaiming the Past to Improve the Future.” She focused on Daesoon Jinrihoe to discover some characteristics of Korean native religions and also to explain how Daesoon Jinrihoe had inherited Korean traditional culture through the architectural style of its temple complexes, usage of Dancheong paints, and the custom of wearing Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) during rituals. The third presenter, Park In-gyu, presented a paper titled, “Holy Teacher Jeung-san and Soteriology of Korean New Religions.” He explained how the Reordering Works of the Universe, by which Sangje opened a new path during a time of desperation, can be soteriologically characterized and compared with traditional religions. After presentation, scholars from Baltic nations actively raised questions and showed their interest in Daesoon Thought and Daesoon Jinrihoe. The conference was meaningful for Daesoon Jinrihoe as it was the first time Daesoon Thought had been introduced to scholars from Baltic nations.

  • The First Regular Performance of the Latin Dance and Ocarina Team at Yeoju Elderly Welfare Center
    On March 29, the Latin Dance and Ocarina Team of Yeoju Elderly Welfare Center had a music and dance performance for the elders at the living room on the third floor of the center. During the first part of the performance, a team of 16 members performed Latin dances that included jive, cha-cha, rumba, and jitterbug to bring joy to the elderly audience. When they sang songs, the elders stood up and danced together in rhythm with the songs. During the second part, the seven-member ocarina team played ocarina while employees at the center sang a song, which created a beautiful harmony that led everyone to feel absorbed by the music. Seeing a promising opportunity, the Yeoju Elderly Welfare Center decided to hold monthly performances by the Latin Dance and Ocarina going forward.

  • Forest Fire Extinguish Training at Yeoju Headquarters Temple Complex
    On the 2nd and 9th day of April 2018, the guards and employees of Yeoju Headquarters Temple Complex received training in how to extinguish forest fires. This training was held to teach employees how to use outdoor fire hydrants, put out forest fire promptly, achieve readiness for any outbreak of forest fires as they often occur in the spring, and to prevent secondary accidents. The individual in charge of the training sessions from the administrative department said “In order to promptly handle forest fires, we have installed 17 outdoor fire hydrants and water tanks in various places around the temple complex” and he emphasized that “Through these fire drills, we have to learn how to extinguish fires and be able to react to emergency situations calmly and safely.”

  • Daejin University Job Center Held the ‘2018 Overseas Job Fair’
    In order to enhance overseas employment opportunities and improve the professional skills and capabilities of young people, the ‘2018 Overseas Job Fair Outreach’ was hosted by Human Resources Development Service of Korea and was held at Daejin University Job Center on March 12, 2018. The lecturer of the day, Jeong Ju Yeong, from Overseas Employment Division of Human Resources Development Service of Korea emphasized the importance of having a definite sense of purpose and setting up both short and long term plans before preparing for overseas employment because if this is not done, employees might quit their jobs early and then face career discontinuity when they return to Korea. Also, Tony Smith, the director of Carrot Global Center, gave a special lecture on how to write English resumes that satisfy the standards held by actual human resource directors. The head of Daejin University Job Center, Lim Seong Wuk, who planned this event, said “It is important to provide practical plans such as strategies to improve the competence of job-seekers which aid them in successful job acquisition. For this purpose, I will keep providing local young people with various programs centered around overseas employment.”
