  • President of Daejin University, Leem Youngmoon, Donated 1,000 COVID-19 Self-diagnosis Kits to ParaSports Gyeonggi
    On January 20th, from the guest room on the 2nd floor of the main building of Daejin University, the university’s president, Leem Youngmoon, donated diagnostic kits to aid in preventing the spread of COVID-19 at both the '19th National Winter Paralympic Games for the Disabled' and the '2022 Beijing Winter Paralympic Games.’ Thereby, 1,000 diagnostic kits were delivered to GyeongGi-Do Sports Association for the Disabled, also known as ‘ParaSports Gyeonggi.’ On that day, President Leem Youngmoon said, “In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I hope that these kits will be used to quickly diagnose viral infections during the operation and activities held by Gyeonggi-do Sports Association for the Disabled. In that manner, the kits can enable the organizers to cope well with COVID-19. If there is a need for further cooperation from Daejin University or other related institutes, we will do our best to provide active support.”

  • Jamsil Branch Temple Donated Rice to Help Their Neighbors on the Eve of Lunar New Year
    On January 27th, Jamsil Branch Temple delivered two hundred 10 kilogram bags of rice to the community center in Muk 1-dong, Jungnang-gu, Seoul to celebrate the the Lunar New Year ushering in the Imin Year (2022). This day's event became an opportunity to spread the virtues of Sangje widely by conveying warmth to local residents who are struggling due to the impact of COVID-19.

  • Bundang Jesaeng Hospital Began the Operation of an Intensive Care Unit for COVID-19
    Bundang Jesaeng Hospital has opened an intensive care unit dedicated specifically to COVID-19 cases. That care unit can manage new infections and critically ill patients. The unit’s full-scale operation is already underway. Bundang Jesaeng Hospital’s intensive care unit 3, which started operation on January 24, is an intensive care unit dedicated to infectious diseases that meets the standards of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This care unit is equipped with facilities, personnel, and patient management all focused on the best infection control possible. The intensive care unit has 7 beds, and these are single beds. In particular, the unit introduces the latest equipment, such as a ventilator, high-flow oxygen therapy device, and a continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) which is necessary for dialysis patients. All of this equipment had been deemed essential for the treatment of critically ill patients. Director Jeong Yun-cheol said, “I am glad to be able to participate in saving critically ill patients with infectious diseases during this difficult pandemic being experienced around the world.” In addition, he received a plaque of appreciation from Prime Minister Kim Bu-gyeom for his contribution toward Korea’s overcoming COVID-19.

  • DAOS Published the English Language Journal JDTREA
    Daejin University's Daesoon Academy of Sciences (DAOS) successfully launched the English language journal, the Journal of Daesoon Thought and the Religions of East Asia (JDTREA www.jdre.org). This first issue, published as one of DAOS's international research projects, contained six articles and one book review all of which were written by overseas scholars. The topics of this issue covered Daesoon Jinrihoe doctrines, the history of the order, and the life of Doju Jo Jeongsan. In particular, Professor Emeritus at the London School of Economics, Eileen Barker, a leading scholar in the study of new religious movements, published a systematically organized book review of the English translation of the scriptures of Daesoon Jinrihoe: The Canonical Scripture, The Guiding Compass of Daesoon, and Essentials of Daesoon Jinrihoe. An article written by Massimo Introvigne, Director of the Center for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR) in Italy, introduced the history of Doju Jo Jeongsan from the perspective of comparative religious studies. Professor Patrick Laude of Georgetown University in the US wrote about the significance of Daesoon Jinrihoe in the context of modern civilization, and the late Professor Liselotte Frisk of Dalarna University in Sweden explored Daesoon Jinrihoe in regards to its development of religious social welfare projects. Professor Susan Palmer of Concordia University in Canada and Jason Greenberger of Daejin University co-authored an article on the role of children in Daesoon Jinrihoe, and Professor Huang Pochi of Huafan University in Taiwan penned his article on the religious and ethical characteristics of Haewon-sangsaeng. Rounding off the debut issue is an article from Professor David Kim of Australian National University who wrote about the concept of Jingyeong (a perfected state of being) and a new type of human based upon the teachings in The Canonical Scripture (Jeon-gyeong). The Editor-in-Chief of JDTREA is Professor Carole Cusack, Professor of Religious Studies, University of Sydney, Australia. The publication of the English language journal of DAOS, JDTREA, was the first publication of its type for an indigenious Korean religion. The journal is expected to be a starting point for the promotion of Daesoon Thought to the world and has an aim of being officially listed as a world-class academic journal (A&HCI, Scopus, etc.).

  • Guest Lectures Featuring Daesoon Theology Were Held at Santa Clara University
    On January 28th, 2022, a non-Korean Daesoon Theology student at Daejin University, Jason Greenberger, was invited by a noted scholar of religious diasporas, Caodaism, and Catholicism, Professor Thien-Huong Ninh, to provide three guest lectures to her students at Santa Clara University. The courses taught by Professor Ninh which Jason presented at were ‘Ways of Understanding Religion,’ ‘Buddhism,’ and ‘Buddhism in America.’ Jason created two separate presentations- one titled Reflections on Being Religious & Working with Daesoon Jinrihoe, Buddhism, & East Asian New Religious Movements and the other titled The Role of Buddhism in Daesoon Jinrihoe & Strategies for Understanding ‘Buddhisms.’ Jason’s presentations helped introduce students to the historical figures Kang Jeungsan, Jo Jeongsan, and Park Wudang and as well as the representative doctrine of the Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence. As the students in these courses have familiarity with Buddhism, Jason also mentioned the role of Maitreya in Daesoon Thought, and the significance of Buddhist figures such as Jin-muk and Jin-pyo. Towards the end of the guest lecture, Jason mentioned Yeoju Headquarters Temple Complex’s temple stay, pilgrimage, and museum, and invited interested students to contact the international affairs team for more details.
