  • Winter Solstice Chiseong
Daesoon Jinrihoe grandly held the winter solstice Chiseong (the devotional offering), with about 5,100 people participating, in Yeoju headquarters temple complex at 1:28 am on Dec. 22. Winter solstice has the longest night of the year and from then, day begins to get longer and longer. Since ancient times, winter solstice, which is called small lunar new year's day, has been considered the day second to Lunar New Year’s Day. The saying has been passed down that “Not until winter solstice passes do we get one year older.” or “We should eat adzuki-bean gruel before we get one year older.” On the winter solstice we used to make adzuki-bean gruel, hold ancestral rites with it, and scatter it on the gate or the wall, praying for the safety and comfort in the new year. However, winter solstice of this year is called ‘child-winter solstice’, which comes in the first ten days of winter solstice lunar month(this year in November 5). There is a kind of custom that we make rice cake instead of adzuki-bean gruel on this child-winter solstice because it is believed that it's harmful to the children. Winter solstice appears firstly in our 24 seasons mantra. The deity taking charge of winter solstice is Zhangsun Wuji, who aided Emperor Taizong of Tang and rendered extinguished services for the establishment of Tang Dynasty. Zhangsun Wuji was made the public figure and recognized as a contributor for establishing a country.

It is important for us respect each other because we all are in our way of spiritual cultivation.
