  • Students of Ilsan Daejin High School to Participate and Represent Korea at the ‘2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair’
Two juniors from Ilsan Daejin High School, Hwang Ji-Hyeon and Hwang Su-Bin (under the guidance of their lead instructor, Choi Hyeon-Ju) were selected to participate as representatives of Korea in the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) that will be held in the US from May 12-17. ISEF is one of the largest among all science related competitions for middle and high school aged students. The two high school students have been researching and working under the instruction of their teacher, Choi Hyeon-Joo, in their school’s free club called ‘STEAM R & E’ when they qualified for the international fair. The subject of their research is ‘optimizing Janggu (a Korean musical instrument) into a modern indoor performance instrument.’ This was a research topic that was passed onto them from their seniors, and after a year of hard work, everything came into fruition. Hwang Ji-Hyeon said “We were able to experience things we could not learn about at school after we studied about Janggu at length and benefited from visiting and asking questions to specialists in Korean music and sound analytics.” Choi Hyeon-Ju, their lead instructor said “It was meaningful for them to have performed research in a school club and their achievement was completed in our school rather than in some private institution.” Ilsan Daejin High School is not a school that focuses on science specifically, but it was designated as a leading school in S/W in 2015 and an S/W subject-focused school in 2016. Also, a number of its students have participated in science related competitions and done really well.
